Our story…

“THE SEA, ONCE IT CASTS ITS SPELL, HOLDS ONE IN ITS NET OF WONDER FOREVER.”

— Jacques Cousteau

Grounded in a shared love for the ocean, nature, good food, and exceptional spirits, Reef Distillers is the harmonious collaboration of two families—the Smiths and the Rumbles.

Shane and Zona Smith, known for their award-winning distillery, West Coast Distillers in Langebaan, South Africa, bring with them a wealth of expertise and a deep-seated passion for the craft. Their dedication to producing exceptional spirits has garnered international acclaim, and their commitment to quality and innovation is unwavering.

The Rumble’s love for the sea and the environment has inspired them to embark on a new chapter, where they will fuse their experience in running Great Barrier Reef island resorts (Pumpkin Island and recently Elysian Retreat) with the artistry of distillation. It is this union of expertise that sets Reef Distillers apart, promising extraordinary adventures for both the discerning connoisseur and the adventurous soul.

At Reef Distillers, we believe in the power of nature's bounty, the essence of coastal living, and the transformative magic of distillation. It is a place where passion, craftsmanship, and the allure of the coast converge. We carefully source the finest local botanicals, capturing the unique flavors and aromas of the Capricorn Coast, to create spirits that celebrate the rich tapestry of our surroundings.

Our distillation process is a labor of love, a dance between tradition and innovation. Every batch is meticulously crafted, incorporating time-honored techniques with modern advancements. The result is an exquisite collection of handcrafted spirits, each with its own distinct character and story to tell.

As custodians of the ocean, we are committed to sustainable practices and the preservation of our marine ecosystems. We actively collaborate with local environmental organizations, championing initiatives that protect and restore our precious coastlines and reefs. With every sip of our spirits, you not only experience the artistry of our craft but also contribute to the conservation of our natural heritage.

Reef Distillers invites you to embark on a sensory voyage, where the symphony of flavors, the whisper of sea breeze, and the warmth of camaraderie intertwine. Our distillery, nestled on the Capricorn Coast, offers an intimate space where you can explore our range of spirits, learn about our craft, and immerse yourself in the stories that have shaped Reef Distillers.

Join us as we embark on this extraordinary adventure, where the spirit of the reef meets the art of distillation. Together, we will create memories, forge connections, and raise a glass to the wonders of nature and the pursuit of great spirits.

UBUNTU

Ubuntu

We strongly believe in the concept of ‘Ubuntu’

Ubuntu means "I am, because you are". In fact, the word ubuntu is just part of the Zulu phrase "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu", which literally means that a person is a person through other people. Ubuntu has its roots in humanist African philosophy, where the idea of community is one of the building blocks of society. Ubuntu is that nebulous concept of common humanity, oneness: humanity, you and me both.

All four of our business owners have spent time in Zululand during our childhood or adult years and so this philosophy of Ubuntu has been ingrained in the core of our beings.

Our success as a brand are we believe intertwined with our commitment, passion and interactions with our local and wider Australian and international community.

The stills

Mr Bean

Mr Bean, the 500 litre copper still

It’s both tradition and good luck to name stills in much the same way naming ships started over a thousand years ago, when sailors named vessels after gods, goddesses or saints hoping to bring good fortune to their travels.

Meet Shane our master distiller, sitting with Mr Bean our 500 litre copper still.

“Mr Bean” is named after Shaun Bebington, one of the founding partners of Pocketful of Stones Distillery in the UK.

Shaun, or Bean as he is affectionately known by his friends was instrumental in Shane’s journey into the world of distilling.

And so our still “Mr Bean” is a nod to this great man and his expertise.

Martina

Martina, the 200 litre copper still

Martina, our 200 litre spirit still, is named in honour of the beautiful mother of Laureth Rumble (standing here next to Martina). Martina passed away in April 2021 from a brain tumour after fighting cancer bravely for nearly 5 years.

Martina had a passionate, generous spirit with a heart bigger than life, always spreading love and kindness. And so, similarly Tina spreads the love…producing exceptional spirits infused with the fruits of our labour and top quality ingredients…

Our inspiration…
